Seminar on Housing and Residential Buildings at Corus Living Solutions

A very successful seminar was held by SCI and Corus Living Solutions (CLS) on 20 June 2006 to promote sustainable and adaptable building technologies in the housing and residential sector.

The seminar took place at Corus' Shotton (Deeside) facility and provided a first opportunity to visit CLS's new semi-automated modular production line, which has been used to manufacture fully fitted-out room-sized modules for the Ministry of Defence's military accommodation initiative, known as Connaught/Allenby.

The presentation to the 35 delegates covered an introduction to steel technologies by Mark Lawson, SCI Professor of Construction Systems at the University of Surrey, new regulations for thermal efficiency by Ray Ogden, SCI Professor of Architecture Technology at Oxford Brookes University, new coated steel and composite products by Tim Brown of Corus Colors, and architectural aspects of CLS modular technology by Steve Thompson, Senior Architect of Corus Construction.

A series of SCI Case Studies of recent projects was presented, including Corus' recently completed demonstration project near Salisbury for the MoD, which consisted of 51 modules in a 3 storey building, and also a 2 storey accommodation block to the Ashorne Hall Management College, Leamington Spa. The MoD projects are unique because they are the first residential buildings to be fully designed for counter-terrorism measures, in which the light steel structure resists blast fragmentation and collapse in these extreme events.
