The Eurocodes – We Are Here to Help

After decades of effort the Eurocodes are finally with us, ready to be used and shortly to be required by (at least some) clients.  Despite one or two views to the contrary, this is not some Machiavellian plan by SCI and others to generate a market for new design guides and courses.  It is a requirement that has been imposed from afar and we are doing what we can to help.

British Standards will be withdrawn in March 2010.  This withdrawal means British Standards will not be maintained and will therefore carry an increased although small risk.  At the time of writing the decision by CLG to postpone the revision of Approved Document A has caused some confusion about the need to adopt the Eurocodes, but we understand this should not be interpreted as a weakening of their commitment to the codes.

On the 25th November, in London, the steel sector held a major launch event for the design guidance that is now available. SCI played a major part in this, alongside colleagues from Corus and the BCSA.  Following this event a first wave of new Eurocode books is available from SCI:

  • Steel Building Design – Introduction to the Eurocodes Steel Building Design – Concise Eurocode;
  • Steel Building Design – Design Data (Blue Book);
  • Steel Building Design –Worked Examples – Open Sections;
  • Steel Building Design – Worked Examples – Hollow Sections;
  • Steel Building Design – Design of Medium Rise Buildings.

We also have Worked Examples for Students (which is valuable to practitioners and students alike), and we will shortly be issuing guidance to cover simple connections (the Eurocode Green Book), fire design and composite construction.

For engineers converting to the Eurocodes, and wanting the best initial introduction to design, we recommend an Essential Eurocode Package – three key publications that cover the essential Eurocode requirements, provide member resistances and a set of worked examples. The package comprises

  • The Blue Book;
  • The Concise Guide;
  • Worked Examples for Students.

All three publications incorporate the influence of the UK National Annexes.
This set of three publications would normally cost £160, but have an introductory price of £75 for SCI members and £130 for Non-members
