SCI Annual Dinner

The SCI celebrated its Annual Dinner in November and once again, our members and their guests assembled at London’s prestigious Landmark Hotel to enjoy excellent cuisine and wines and to catch up with friends and colleagues.

Our guest speaker this year was Garry Richardson, perhaps best known for his contribution to Radio Four’s Today programme.  Garry regaled the audience with his experiences of the sporting world and the many characters he has met and worked with in his years as a radio and TV sports presenter.

This year’s Dinner also marked the retirement of Graham Owens as Director of the Institute and the appointment of Graham Couchman as his successor. Graham Owens was presented with lifetime membership of the SCI by Professor Patrick Dowling, who recalled their time together at Imperial College.

In Graham Couchman’s first public event as Director of the Institute, he described how he had learned a great deal during his three year term at BRE but was nevertheless very pleased to be back amongst familiar faces.  He also noted that this was a time of great opportunity for the sector.

It also fell to Graham to announce the results of this year’s charity collection and prize draw in aid of RedR, the charity which provides professionals and expertise to assist in disaster areas around the world. The collection raised £1,400 and members of the winning table hosted by The Angle Ring Co Ltd and Propex Concrete Systems all received a bottle of champagne to celebrate.
