SMD Deck Version 5.1 Brings Significant Performance Increases

An update has been released for the Structural Metal Decks Ltd (SMD) design software for the preparation of calculations for composite slabs using SMD decking profiles (Construction, Normal & Fire Stages) to BS5950: Part 4: 1994.  This software has a number of advanced features including; information and error message panes, images to assist in the design process, and links to related SCI publications & SMD web content. The following improvements have been made in the latest version –

  • Improvements to fire, ponding and m & k procedures

Fire analysis procedures have been optimised resulting in significantly improved fire performance. Analysis of ponding concrete, previously always included, has now been brought in line with BS5950-4 which, looking to the future, is similar to the requirements for Eurocode 4. The longitudinal shear calculation has been modified to ensure that it follows the latest advice with respect to concentrated loads close to supports.

  • Improvements to cross-section graphics

Cross section graphics now include details of the specified mesh and bar reinforcement along with cover requirements for ease of reference.

  • Minor interface improvements

General modifications to improve the usability of the interface have been incorporated following customer and client feedback.

As part of the SCI Software Quality Assurance system, the software has a built-in notification system, meaning that existing users will automatically be notified that an update is available and offered it as a seamless download.

New users can obtain a copy of the software from SMD’s website:
