SCI short-listed for the Health & Safety Awards 2008

The SCI has been short-listed for the Health and Safety Awards 2008 for their work in the Trojan Horse Initiative. The Trojan Horse is a new communication technique that conveys health and safety information via pictorial messages to construction site workers.

The Health and Safety Awards organised by Building Magazine in association with the Health and Safety Executive reward excellence, innovation and professionalism in all areas of construction safety, occupational health and staff welfare.

Research studies, carried out in conjunction with major contractors, the HSE and other stakeholders, have showed that the Trojan Horse is an effective means of communicating health and safety issues to construction workers. Following the success of the research phase, the SCI recently embarked on a project to facilitate the uptake and application of the Trojan Horse in the Construction Industry via the development of a website and active engagement of various construction trade associations.

From the conception of the initiative, the Trojan Horse has had strong support from the construction industry. Constructors such as Taylor Woodrow, Skanska, Bovis, Mace and Multiplex, participated in the research phases and the support continues: Taylor Woodrow, Morgan Sindall, North Midlands Construction, Saint Gobain Building Distribution, IHS, Construction Skills and the HSE, are the sponsors of the ongoing phase of the Trojan Horse.

For the Health and Safety Awards 2008, the Trojan Horse entry was submitted for the category 'best safety product or equipment', which aims to recognise any new product, equipment or technology that improves health or safety.
