SCI hosts International Expert Seminar in Stainless Steel

SCI’s November International Stainless Steel In Structures Experts seminar welcomed 42 international delegates comprising technical experts, stainless steel development associations and industry representatives from 17 countries.

The delegates shared 18 technical papers on recent advances in the understanding of the behaviour of structural stainless steel including more efficient design techniques, fire resistance and concrete filled stainless steel sections.

Nancy Baddoo, manager of materials at SCI, contributed a technical paper which described covered opportunities for stainless steel in sustainable development. She commented; “There is significant potential to increase the quantity of stainless steel used in structural applications. With this in mind, it was really positive to welcome representatives from the stainless steel production and manufacturing industry at the seminar who had the opportunity to influence and encourage future research in the areas that industry needs it to be carried out in.”

The seminar included interactive sessions on future research topics and priorities.

The event was funded by Euro Inox, the International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF), the Outokumpu Research Foundation and the International Molybdenum Association (IMOA).

The papers will be published as a special edition of the Journal of Constructional Steel Research in Spring 2008.
