SCI Goes Stateside
The wider use of stainless steel structures in the USA has been impeded by a lack of design guidance, leaving designers with the choice of conducting their own investigations or abandoning stainless steel in favour of alternative materials.

To rectify this, SCI has been commissioned to prepare a design guide for welded and hot rolled stainless steel structural steelwork for publication by the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) as one of their series of Design Guides. These guides offer supplementary advice and information to the AISC Manual of Steel Construction, and currently cover topics such as high strength bolts and floor vibrations. The new guide will be based on current European stainless steel design guidance, but will be adapted to align to US design philosophy. It will cover:
-
Material properties, selection and durability and properties of cross-sections;
-
Member design, joint design (welded and bolted connections);
-
Fatigue, testing, fabrication and erection.
The project is being funded by two stainless steel manufacturers (Stainless Structurals and Stalatube), one stainless steel producer (Outokumpu) and two market development associations (the Nickel Institute and the International Molybdenum Association). SCI are being supported in the venture by Foit-Albert Associates, an American engineering firm.
