Online Database places Stainless Steel as the Construction Material of the Future

The SCI have recently launched an Online Information Centre for Stainless Steel in Construction. The Information Centre, www.stainlessconstruction.com, is designed to encourage practitioners to use stainless steel by helping them find information on successful applications and technical guidance on specifying, designing, fabricating and installing stainless steel.

The clearly structured online database of information presents the resource title, a brief abstract describing the content, date of publication, the source website and hyperlinks to open the resource in the languages in which it is available. The resources are searchable either by a free text search or by navigation through the following sections:

  • Specification
  • Codes and Standards
  • Design
  • Fabrication and Installation
  • Case Studies
  • Research

Stainless steel is a construction material for the future; it has inherent properties such as excellent corrosion resistance, strength and durability which require little maintenance over the design life. Due to the initial higher costs in comparison to carbon steels, stainless steels are often overlooked and so there is a relative lack of awareness and confidence in using this material in construction. The demand for more sustainable construction is rapidly increasing and while the appetite for cleaner, more modern and bigger structures remains, the demand and use of stainless steels has increased. However codes, guides and information regarding stainless steels are relatively scattered and difficult to find. Therefore this website has collated direct links to all the relevant, useful resources on stainless steels with the hope that the site can become a focus of information for architects, engineers, building owners, fabricators, erectors and academics to use and add to over the coming years.

The Information Centre was sponsored by the members of Team Stainless (Euro Inox, the International Chromium Development Association, the International Molybdenum Association, the International Stainless Steel Forum and The Nickel Institute).
