Will the Eurocodes be the biggest challenge facing our sector this year?

Or should that say the biggest opportunity?  Either way, after an interminably long gestation period practitioners really are going to have to start to get to grips with EC3 (steel) and EC4 (composite).  Recognising this importance, and thanks to generous support from Corus, SCI will be publishing an extensive set of Eurocode guides over the next two years or so.  The first wave, to be published this summer, will include:

  • Introduction to the Eurocodes;
  • Design of medium rise braced frames;
  • Design data (the blue book);
  • Worked examples;
  • Concise guide for building design.

The next wave will include guidance on simple connections, combined bending and torsion, lateral restraint, bridge design and composite construction.  All publications relate to the final (EN) versions of the codes, including information given in the National Annexes which must be used when the structure is to be constructed in the UK.

To complement these publications we will be offering a range of Eurocode related courses, both ‘public’ and ‘in-house’ (see new courses list by visiting www.steel-sci.org/Courses).

The provision of publications and courses is part of a coordinated response from Corus, BCSA and SCI to aid the transition away from British Standards.
