Eurocode training
SCI is heading up a partially European funded project to develop a quality online Eurocode training resource for steel design and construction. The plan is to deliver 12 modules by the Autumn of 2009. The project will also review CPD (continuing professional development) frameworks in other countries and explore opportunities to standardise professional engineering qualifications and training materials across Europe.
The name of the project is EQUESTA (Electronic, Quality Assured, European Steel Training and Assessment) and partners include the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Czech Technical University and the Romanian based Britt Engineering and Association of Engineers.
As part of the project, SCI and the Team are reviewing existing online delivery tools, identifying end user needs and selecting Eurocode topics and multi-media tools to include in the online training material. The final e-modules will complement traditional SCI courses and be designed to encompass CPD requirements.
SCI and the Institution of Structural Engineers recently carried out a nationwide survey to explore Eurocode training needs and preferred models for e-learning. This survey can be downloaded from the project website at http://www.equesta.eu/. Later on in the project, SCI will be inviting engineers to test the new training resource and provide feedback on its development.
Ultimately, the project will contribute to a wider initiative for a European qualifications framework which will guarantee competence through recognisable and comparable degrees. Currently it is difficult to compare levels of competence across Europe due to lack of comparability and standardisation between engineering degrees and qualifications.
