Improving the construction sector’s health and safety record is high on the agenda of both industry and the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
SCI initiated the Trojan Horse project in 2003 to assess the effectiveness of delivering pictorially health and safety information to construction site operatives at point of use, i.e. on the material or equipment being used. This unique technique overcomes language barriers and delivers the right information at the right place. As the UK prepares to welcome more European construction workers it is critical that key aspects of health and safety are largely understood and embraced by site workers regardless of their native language. The Trojan Horse Messaging technique contributes to a safer environment for construction workers and represents a sustainable solution to site safety.
SCI is now embarking on the third phase of the Trojan Horse Messaging project which is a Joint Industry Project aiming to develop the tools to facilitate the uptake and application of the Trojan Horse health and safety messaging technique. The deliverables include the design of a further set of health and safety messages, a dedicated website and a toolkit which contains exemplar applications for different types of construction. The project is sponsored by:
- Taylor Woodrow and Morgan Sindall (main contractors)
- Saint-Gobain Building Distribution (a supplier of building products)
- IHS (a supplier of technical information)
- Construction Skills (an organisation concerned with training and qualifying the construction workforce)
- The Health and Safety Executive
