Corus Student Awards
The Corus Students Awards (2008) for Structures and Bridges are a pair of undergraduate prize award competitions organised by The Steel Construction Institute. Both competitions are open to undergraduates.
The objectives of the competitions are to encourage excellence in steel bridge design and engineering design skills in the use of structural steelwork.
The Bridges brief is to design a structure to carry a pedestrian link and cycleway over a major river that separates two parts of a major city.
The Structures brief is to prepare an outline design for a new airport terminal building and control tower.
Details of both briefs are available to download from http://discus.steel-sci.org where questions about the brief may also be posted.
Information about previous award winners is provided below.
Undergraduate Steel Design Awards 2005/2006
The prestigious awards ceremony for the Undergraduate Steel Design competitions took place at the Institution of Civil Engineers in London on 14 July 2006.
The prizes were presented by Mr Nelson Ogunshakin, Chief Executive of the Association for Consultancy and Engineering, Dr Graham Owens, Director of the SCI, Mr Alan Todd, General Manager Technical Sales and Marketing Corus C&I and the Chairmen of each judging panel (Mr Barry Mawson for Bridges and Mr Alan Jones for Structures).
Steel Bridge Design Award - The Brief
The brief presented a deep gorge to be crossed by a single carriageway access bridge. The structure had to have an overall length of 210m, which could be supported from two intermediate foundations if necessary. The key challenge was that access was largely limited to one side of the gorge, which was expected to drive both the bridge form and the construction sequence.

Structural Steelwork Design Award - The Brief
The challenge this year was to provide a high-level access station for a rollercoaster ride. The brief called for areas to wait, to embark and disembark; together with retail and train maintenance zones. The access to high level and the need to enclose the structure despite the bi-section by the rollercoaster and track provided structural challenges, whilst the demand for a themed structure was expected to lead to dramatic design concepts.
