Companies gain competitive edge with new SCI analysis model

Drawing on their considerable experience of developing and testing deck products, SCI engineers have developed an Improved Engineering Model (IEM) that more accurately predicts cold-formed steel product behaviour in a wider range of construction scenarios than traditional analysis models allow.

SCI’s Specialist Consultancy engineers originally developed the IEM to support Corus Panels and Profiles with the development of their CF60 deck profile product. The new analysis considerably increased the allowable spanning capability of continuous cold-formed steel decking products for multi-storey buildings, resulting in the use of fewer beams and leading to a reduction in cost.

The IEM allowed the product to be used across a wider range of loads, slab depths and beyond the usual conservative safe spans specified by traditional load span tables.

Dr. Heywood, Senior Manager at SCI commented: "The IEM has far wider application beyond decking; it can be used to more accurately model the behaviour of a variety of other products such as purlins and cladding. In fact, that of any cold-formed steel product."

The Specialist Consultancy team supports a number of companies and individuals wishing to progress innovative products and solutions, fully supported by SCI’s team of experts in engineering, building physics, design and fire safety.
