A New Era for SCI

On the 8th October 2009 a fundamental change to the institute took place.  It’s worth noting this because in terms of day-to-day activities there may be nothing to note!  The rules put in place at our inception in 1986 had us governed by a Council, drawn from our membership, with the members of Council being the Directors of the institute and registered as such at Companies House.

However, at our AGM on the 8th the members agreed to adopt new rules for the institute which state that we will be governed by a much smaller board of Directors, comprising both executive and non-executive members.  Key drivers for this were new laws for Directors concerning conflicts of interest and responsibilities.  The new board comprises Martin Manning as our non-executive Chairman, with Alan Todd, Terry Goodwin and Richard Barrett as non-executive Directors.  Graham Couchman is Chief Executive and Bassam Burgan is an executive Director.  In simple terms, this team will be responsible for ensuring that the institute runs effectively.

We recognised that the move to a more compact board should not, however, result in one of the other benefits of Council being discarded.  That is the benefit of knowledge and support from a significant group of key players in the sector.  To assure continuity of these benefits we will be forming a Sector Advisory Council, drawn from the membership, to consider issues of importance to our members and the sector as a whole.  David Brown will be leading this initiative.
