A Bolt of Innovation
Toggle bolts are an innovative “blind” fixing (where access is only available from one side). A range of sizes are available for different applications, with the completed assembly working as a connection in bearing.
Within the shank of the bolt, there is an anchor that rotates after installation and allows the bolt to be tightened. A number of bolts have been tested by The University of Manchester, in tension, shear, bearing and combined shear and tension, to arrive at a set of characteristic values to be used in design.
The testing has been completed and the results are very encouraging with a narrow spread of resistances. SCI will use the statistical approach in the Eurocode to assess the results, allow for variations in material and tolerances and produce a set of design values.
The design values will be appropriate for use with BS5950 and BS EN 1993. Once the analysis work is completed, the design resistances will be endorsed with the SCI Assessed logo, reassuring users that the resistances have been correctly determined.
