Eurocodes
SCI helps you to get ready for the transition to Eurocodes
Progress on National Annexes
All the Loading parts of the Eurocodes are available. The only significant ‘missing’ National Annex is to BS EN 1991-1-4, which covers wind loads. This is a very significant National Annex as it modifies the Eurocode considerably, and describes a process rather similar to BS 6399-2. Although the National Annex has been circulated for public comment, calibration between the Eurocode with its Annex and BS 6399-2 has been taking place. The Annex is expected to be published early in 2008.
On the resistance side, various National Annexes have been circulated for public comment and are to be published shortly. The most important is the National Annex to BS EN 1993-1-1 (General rules), and this should be available in the first quarter of 2008.
The ‘Burgundy Book’ (the Eurocode version of the ‘Blue Book’)
The ‘Burgundy’ book is the equivalent to the famous ‘Blue Book’ and is merely awaiting confirmation of the National Annex values. The presentation is in accordance with the Eurocode, and the resistances are presented in a form for direct use. Some interesting omissions in the Eurocode have been highlighted, and at least one significant mistake. Where rules are omitted and there is no NCCI (Non-conflicting complementary information), rules from BS 5950 have been adopted. The preparation of the Burgundy Book has highlighted some areas where there can be significant economy compared to BS 5950, notably in Lateral-torsional buckling resistance.
Some new electronic tools to support the EN’s from and SCI-IHS partnership

On the heels of the ‘Mauve’ book SCI and I H S have teamed up to develop and electronic version of the Mauve book that gives designers the chance to carry with then a personalised version of the book from computer to computer.
We asked designers : ‘What would you have in your ideal version of a Blue Book supporting the introduction of the Eurocodes?’
The e-Burgundy Book is the answer some of the functionality it delivers includes:
-
Customisable families of sections;
-
The ability to specify design length ranges and generate bespoke tables;
-
The ability to track unity factors for design solutions having input design loads;
-
The ability to add ‘post-it’ notes to pages;
-
The ability to highlight results and output tables to the printer or to MS® Excel;
The product is highly customisable to the individual and is of course always up to date.
Publications update
The SCI are now working on a range of publication to support the Eurocodes. Over the coming (year?) designers will see the following publication from the SCI:
Buildings
Introduction to Eurocodes
Concise guide for building structures
Section Properties and Member Resistances (The ‘Burgundy Book')
Eurocode version of the ‘Red Book’
Multi-storey braced frames
Worked examples – open sections
Worked examples – hollow sections
Student examples (to the Eurocode without the National Annex)
Fire
Fire Guidance (Dec 07) Need details of this one.
Bridges
Three Bridge guides.
Technical Support
With the publication of the UK National Annexes, demand for comprehensive information on design to the Eurocodes increases considerably.
SCI is in a unique position to lead the transition to Eurocodes 3 and 4 in the UK.
SCI provides a number of tools (publications, courses and online information) to help you understand step-by-step how to use the Eurocodes when designing new buildings. With sponsorship from Corus and support from BCSA, nine guides to help designers with the transition to Eurocodes are available and these include the Eurocode equivalents to the “Blue Book” and “Red Book”, a guide to medium rise multi-storey building, worked examples and a concise guide for building design. Visit www.shop.steelbiz.org to order copies of SCI’s Eurocodes publications.
