Course Full Description

The design of steel bridges is a two-day course aimed at graduate engineers with a basic knowledge of bridge design who are employed in consulting practices and public/local authorities.  Speakers include many designers and steelwork fabricators actively involved in highway bridge design and thus the course provides access to the latest ‘best practice’ design guidance.  For structural design, reference is made to the Structural Eurocodes; these Eurocodes are now being accepted by client authorities as the basis for design and they will be the only recognised Standard when BS 5400 is withdrawn in 2010.

The objectives of this course are:

·         To give an overview of common forms of steel bridge used in the highway infrastructure

·         To explain the design basis set out in the Structural Eurocodes and the evaluation of bridge loading

·         To examine the modeling techniques for bridges, in order to determine internal forces and moments

·         To explain the basis for determining the resistance of structural members, bracing systems and connections

·         To examine the requirements for fatigue design

·         To give practical guidance on material selection, connection detailing, bridge articulation and support

·         To give guidance on design for economical and durable construction

Having attended this course you will be able to:

  • Be familiar with the design issues for a range of medium-span bridge solutions
  • Understand the evaluation of design loading in accordance with the Eurocodes
  • Understand procedures for designing the principal elements of composite (steel and concrete) highway bridges
  • Understand the choice of steel grade for highway bridges
Who Should Attend This course is aimed at graduate engineers and any designers wishing to expand their knowledge of steel bridge design
