SCI Course Details

This 2-day course is aimed at chartered or near-chartered engineers with some experience of steel bridge design. It offers advice from members of the Steel Bridge Group, to extend a designer’s understanding of how steel bridges perform structurally and to explore more complex forms of construction for highway bridges.

Light gauge steel is a vital component in the industrial building sector and in the multi-storey sector light steel framing is used for buildings up to 6 storeys and higher when combined with hot-rolled steel. The benefits of light steel framing include that it is lighter, stronger, more durable and, when coupled with off-site advantages, it is more sustainable than traditional methods. The benefits of light steel construction mean that is the ideal choice to meet the challenges of modern construction.

This course provides a solid introduction into the design of steel framed buildings to avoid disproportionate collapse. The guidance provided is in accordance with the latest Building Regulations and Approved Document A (2004 edition) which mean that disproportionate collapse must be considered in the design of all buildings. 

Frame stability concerns the significance of second-order effects and is highlighted as an essential check for all frames in BS 5950 and EC3. Whilst in many braced frames the effects will not be significant, designers should be confident in using the simple checks to determine frame sensitivity, and the simple rules to allow for such effects

On-line Steel Building Design to EC3 is a live on-line course delivered in three sessions over 3 consecutive weeks, you will need to be available for each of the 3 morning sessions. The course will introduce the Eurocode provisions for Steel Design to experienced steel designers.

BS5950 has been withdrawn.  Although there will be a transition period some clients and insurers will demand the use of BS EN 1993 following this withdrawal.  Awareness of the changes, timely preparation and adoption may be critical to the success of your business.

This course enables designers to create spreadsheets using Excel to carry out a wide range of calculations that would otherwise be time consuming and prone to human error.
