Career Opportunities at the SCI
The SCI is always keen to hear from individuals who have ability and experience in the various types of project work that we carry out.
Important attributes include an excellent qualification - certainly to degree level - and the ability to write clearly and concisely is essential. Presentation skills are important as part of our mission is to disseminate our work to the steel industry worldwide. Experience is important, but the enthusiasm to tackle new ideas is even more important, since the work SCI undertakes is usually at the leading edge of technical development.
Staff at the SCI generally work on a wide range of projects, from design methods to ICT and sustainability. Individuals are likely to develop a particular expertise and so become an acknowledged expert in one (or more) subjects.
Personal development
Personal development is a core objective for our employees. Staff are expected to undertake training and become professionally qualified. Currently, training includes technical development and marketing qualifications.
Positions at the SCI are characterised by a high level of individual responsibility across a wide variety of projects.

- Engineers with an excellent understanding of structural mechanics, to progress projects supporting the introduction of the Eurocodes and to advise others on the framing of steel structures. Experienced Designers with an appreciation of the structural mechanics that lie behind the Code Clauses would be ideal for us.
- Software developers with engineering ability, to work on a number of engineering software products. Experience of Microsoft® .NET technologies and Visual Basic would be valuable.
